Cheap Pet Insurance Covers Major Health Problems

 Pet Insurance

Many pet owners consider their animals to a part of their family and will do anything and pay anything to make sure they are taken care of properly. Until a few years ago, the idea of having health insurance for pets was not a typical solution to the ever increasing cost of veterinary care, but as more advanced tests and procedures come available to the animal world, many owners are looking to cheap pet insurance for their ‘family’ members.

As with all types of insurance the coverage included in the policy will dictate the cost and with many cheap pet insurance policies, only major catastrophic illnesses or accidents are covered. Some of the more expensive plans may pay for regular visits to the veterinarian as well as treatments for various illnesses, but most of the cheap pet insurance policies will be limited in the scope of coverage.

Many diagnostic tests that used to be available only to humans are now available to animals and even organ transplants are available to many pets. Without some type of cheap pet insurance, the cost of caring for a pet will cause the pet owner to make some difficult decisions about paying for the services. With some procedures costs $20,000 or more, those without pet health insurance will have little choice but to allow nature to take its course.

How Should You Compare Pet Insurance?

In order to really understand pet insurance we should probably compare pet insurance to something we are already familiar with like people health insurance.  When you compare pet insurance to something like our own health insurance it gives you a better appreciation of not only the services that are similar but how far veterinary care has really come in the last 20 or 30 years.  If we compare pet insurance to something we are familiar with then it allows us to appreciate it more and understand why it is something that can be helpful to pet owners and also how pet insurance can help to keep your pet around for a very long time.  Pet insurance is like any other health insurance in that its goal is to not just be there when something bad happens but to work with the pet owner in trying to maintain good pet health to prevent something bad from potentially happening.

The first thing we see when we compare pet insurance to our own insurance is that it tends to cover many of the same things.  Regular office visits, prescription drugs, and annual required shots are all there when we compare pet insurance and we begin to realize that caring for our pet is a lot like caring for ourselves.  We both need a lot of the same types of things, even though the exact nature of each shot and visit is vastly different, we still benefit from regular doctor visits in the same way that our pets do.  Initially it does not seem fair to compare pet insurance to our own insurance because, whether we want to admit it or not, we value our own lives a lot more than we value our pets lives but a small fee paid each month to a pet insurance company buys a lot of piece of mind.

The Big Expenses

Many times pet owners are faced with difficult decisions when it comes to finding that balance between pet care and economics.  Some pet care is prohibitive due to cost and the other thing that makes it prohibitive is, along with the cost, is the uncertainty as to whether or not treatment will actually work.  In the world of animal care there are many more unknowns that in the world of human care and even though veterinary medicine is advancing each and every day there are still many conditions that family pets get that many veterinarians just do not have a solid answer for.  Taking the time to find that answer through treatment can get expensive and pet health insurance can help the pet owner make the decision to treat their pet rather than put the pet down by offering financial help with serious ailments.  That sounds a lot like human health insurance when you compare pet insurance to it.

As veterinary medicine makes advances then so does the elements around it.  In order to keep up with the rising cost of research in to pet health care the costs of medicines and procedures must keep going up.  In many ways this is the same exact scenario as human health care.  As human health care advances continue the cost keeps going up and health insurance becomes more and more important.  So too is the case for pet health insurance which, in many ways, is becoming just as essential to the family as human health insurance.

Be Sure To Verify Available Coverage

If a pet owner is in the market for health protection for their pet, when looking at cheap pet insurance insure the coverage will be more than just a monthly drain on the budget. In some policies certain ailments may not be covered based on the history of the breed. For example, many cheap pet insurance policies will not cover hip dysplasia for beagles as the disease is known to attack that specific type of dog.

Many of the available cheap pet insurance policies will cover only the services offered by a licensed veterinarian and while they pay for surgical procedures and related care, they may not cover the costs associated with overnight stays in the animal hospital following surgery. If the pet will need follow up care, they may also pay only a portion of the costs, especially if the animal is referred to another caregiver.

While cheap pet insurance may give owners peace of mind in the event their animal is seriously injured or contracts a disease, the coverage needs to be review to determine what medical expenses will be covered before deciding on a policy.
